Oseikrom Sikanii Ft Kwaw Kese x Guru – Gen Z Hiplife

Oseikrom Sikanii, Kwaw Kese and Guru celebrate the past and the present of Ghanaian rap on Gen Z Hiplife, a vibrant record that pays tribute to the genre that shaped them while giving it a new-school twist. Two veterans of the hiplife era join Kumasi’s most entertaining voice, and the result is a history lesson you can dance to.

The production blends the drum patterns of classic hiplife with modern Afrobeats production, and each artiste brings a different generation’s flavour: Kwaw Kese’s raw energy, Guru’s melodic street style and Sikanii’s humour. The official audio is on Sikanii’s channel.

What Gen Z Hiplife is about

Hiplife, the fusion of highlife and hip-hop that Reggie Rockstone pioneered in the 1990s, is the foundation of modern Ghanaian rap, and Gen Z Hiplife is a celebration of how it has evolved. The verses reference the classics, the slang and the fashion of the hiplife era while making clear that the genre belongs to today’s youth as much as to the pioneers. It is nostalgic and current at the same time, which is a hard balance to strike.

About Kwaw Kese and Guru

Kwaw Kese, born Emmanuel Botchwey, broke through in the mid-2000s under Hammer of The Last Two with “Oye Nonsense” and became one of Ghana’s most recognisable rappers, known as Abodam. Guru, born Maradona Yeboah Adjei, is a hiplife star of the same era, famous for hits such as “Lapaz Toyota”, “Alkayida” and “Boys Abr3”, and for a street-smart melodic style that influenced many of today’s artistes.

Why the song matters

Ghanaian music has been looking back at its roots lately, and Gen Z Hiplife is one of the most enjoyable results. It introduces younger listeners to two legends of the genre, gives older fans a reason to dance and shows that hiplife’s spirit lives on in the Kumasi street scene. The song has found a home at parties, on radio and on throwback playlists across the country.
