Kwesi Slay – Waste Man

Kwesi Slay pulls no punches on Waste Man, a bold, unapologetic record aimed at the time-wasters, fakes and pretenders who cross his path. The Ghanaian rapper delivers it with the raw energy and street awareness that have built his following, and the official video on his channel matches the song’s no-nonsense attitude.

The production is hard-hitting Afro-trap with a bouncy hook, and Kwesi Slay’s delivery is confident and direct, mixing Twi, pidgin and English. It is a record about standards, about who gets your time and who does not.

What Waste Man is about

“Waste man” is street slang for someone who is all talk and no substance, and Kwesi Slay uses the song to call them out: the friend who never shows up, the rival who never releases, the hanger-on who wants the benefits without the work. The hook is a dismissal set to music, and the verses add the detail with humour and bite. It is confrontational, but the confrontation is with a type rather than a person, and that is what makes it relatable.
